Literally analysis Engelska 6
“By the time the plane was airborne I’d forgotten England even existed.” Revealed the main character Richard in the adventurous novel “The Beach”. (Garland pp. 115.) This book is a retelling of Richard's trip to Thailand. The novel was written in 1996 by an English author named Alex Garland and is written in an youthful language and easy-to-read text. After reading this book, it proves that just because you are on the adventure of your life does not mean that all of your problems will disappear, even worse ones can arise instead.
Richard meets the french couple Etienne and Francoise in Bangkok. They found a map on Richard’s door marked with an X with the text “The beach”. They want to get there in the belief of finding a secret beach, which they do, but what does it take to get there?
Their belief in coming to this beach would be the adventure of their lives. To get to paradise would, unfortunately, take a lot of courage and trouble against their expectations.
And their first real obstacle is when they have to swim over a kilometre to get to the island. They were doing fine in the beginning of the swim, but when they got half way they got scared. “Then, as our legs began to ache and the water no longer felt cold enough to cool us down, we stopped talking.” and “The jokes about sharks became fears, and I started to doubt that I had the strength to finish the swim.”. (Garland, pp. 71) This was the first time on their adventure where they felt afraid. He also thought to himself that “Not being able to finish the swim would mean dying.”. (Garland, pp. 71) Knowing that they would die if they did not finish the swim gives them the adrenaline so they could make the swim to safety on land.
When they manage to come to safety on the island they collapse with exhaustion and sleep the night there. The next day they keep on going to get to the beach. And they arrive in a dope field which puts them in a scary and life-threatening situation. “We stared at each other, ‘Jesus Christ,’ I said slowly. Then we’re in deep shit.” (Garland, pp. 78) Their fear gets confirmed when they hear voices in thai, they understand that it is the guards to the field. “He pointed to a dark copse. ‘We hide in there.’ (Garland, pp. 79) They manage to hide from the dangerous guards, but for how long will they have to stay there until the guards disappear? The unknown question makes them panic, but they managed to stay quiet. Also the knowledge of being killed if they get found put them into anxiety. When the guards disappear and their tension releases “Francoise suddenly burst into tears. Then Etienne started crying too.” and ‘I just knelt on the ground, sweat running from my hairline and down the side of my face, and thought of nothing.’. (Garland, pp. 80) When you get into this type of situation many people freeze and it is not until afterwards when they feel relief, their emotions come out of their bodies.
“An overwhelming sensation washed over me, almost boredom, a strange listlessness. I was suddenly sick of how difficult this journey had become.”. (Garland, pp. 84) Richard felt that when they reached a high waterfall that they had to jump from in order to arrive at the beach. This made them scared because they did not know how deep the water was, if the water was not deep enough they would have died or hit themselves hard into the bottom.
In short I can summarise that their anticipation made them forget the danger that can appear during their way to get to paradise. Just because you are on the adventure of your life does not mean that all of your problems will disappear, even worse ones can arise instead. This is something that everyone would think of, my own experience of when I am on vacation you do things that you would never do in the country you live in. There is this feeling of freedom, that you want to do everything to explore where you travelled and not thinking of the consequences.
Hej!
Nu har jag inte hunnit läsa igenom hela, men såg att du i första meningen hade en sammandragning "I'd", vilket man bör undvika i formellt språk. Även konstruktionen "I'd forgotten". Skulle tro, utan att vara någon expert på engelska att "forgot" blir mer korrekt form, men rätta mig gärna om jag har fel :)
Ja tack för upplysningen, dock är det ett citat ur boken så antar att det är okej isåfall?
