Helen Clark, not only New Zealand’s first female prime minister.
“No-one is going to put out a red carpet for any of us. You have to knock those doors down”
I am not so sure most of you have heard about Helen Clark. The woman from New Zealand who has written woman history by accomplishing a couple of first female titles, becoming the UN’s most influential leader on social media platforms who then spoke directly to the public and a member of several organisations who works for a better society, gender equality and sustainable development.
Let me tell you the story of this incredible woman's work, who even has featured in the Forbes list of World’s Most Powerful Women since 1999.
Her time as the first female prime minister started in 1999 where she was the first woman in New Zealand ever elected for prime minister.
She did three successful terms and achieved significant economic growth, low levels of unemployment and high levels of investment in education, health and well-being of families and older citizens.
Helen was also a promoter of the role of arts, culture and heritage and its unique identity of New Zealand.
In 2008 Helen Clarks Labour Party was defeated, Clark stepped down as the Labour leader and became an administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 2009 and therefore became the first female to assume this position.
When an important mission ends, you can skip to the next even more important mission.
Helen served as an administrator at the UNDP from 2009-2017 and accomplished to make the UNDP a more modern organisation and made it able to meet new challenges in a changing world. UNDP is today leaner, more focused and more effective according to ambassador Ib Petersen, permanent representative of Denmark to the UN.
To resume Helen Clarks work in one way: “For eight years Helen Clark has focused her work and advocacy on the needs of the poor and marginalized around the world, be it in promoting the rights of woman, LGBTI, refugees, migrants and people with HIV/AIDS or in areas such as environmental protection, climate action, disaster risk reduction and democratic governance”- Ib Petersen, on Helens departure as administrator of UNDP in 2017.
So from 1999-2017 she achieved much as a first female and you might think the story of Helen ends here? not quite.
This woman will keep on knocking doors down.
Have you for example heard of Club Madrid? A non-profit, independent organisation with former presidents and prime ministers, that was created in 2001 where Helen is a member of the Board of Directors of Club Madrid.
Some of their main goals are the strengthening of democratic institutions and counselling on the resolution of political conflicts in the areas of democratic leadership and governance.
She is also a member of the Global Leadership Foundation since 2017, which is also a non-profit organisation that seeks to assist developing countries improve governance, support democratic institutions and resolve conflicts.
In 2019 Helen became patron of the Helen Clark Foundation. An independant, non-partisan think tank in New Zealand that aims at diagnosing problems the society faces and are proposing new solutions.
How many doors will this woman knock down?
After all of her dedicated work, important missions and first female titles she might deserve to have the red carpet rolled out for her.
But it is only going to happen when the world knows who Helen Clark is, and it is not too far away.
So Helen Clark, I thank you for your dedicated work and strength. I am glad to have participated in what you are fighting for. I wish you the best of luck and you go girl!

/moderator
