Child-rearing: Now versus 100 years

Child-rearing is about the process from raising a child from birth to adulthood as they can stand on their own legs and take care of themselves. Raising a child requires a lot of nursing, caring and the most important, love and patient.

I have just read the Sixpence story from Solid Gold where Katherine Mansfield (1921) is telling us a story about how child-rearing could be 100 years ago. One thing the story is letting us know is that whipping was a common method when raising a child back then. . Now you can start ask yourself, does violence have affects that could cause the child any damage in the future? Is there a better way of teaching the child right or wrong? It is clear that child-rearing has changed over the years and I will discuss the differences between the different approaches from now versus 100 years ago.

As you can tell, modern child-rearing versus child-rearing in the past has very different approaches and thoughts on how to successfully raising a child. One thing that the modern system of rearing is that the parents want your child to learn by doing.

What I mean by that is that children nowadays have more freedom and freedom could lead to success but of course also to misstakes.

Author Katherine Mansfield’s said in the book that ‘’ Children are unaccountable little creatures.’’ She talks about a boy named Dicky. Dicky has abusive parents that chose to punish him by violence. When he put a big plate on his head and dropped it, a family friend to the mother in the story told her that the only thing that would teach Dicky to behave is to let the father in the family whip him. This leads us to a big difference from that time versus now. Nowadays a lot of parents does not think that whipping or violence is solving any kind of problem, rather the opposite. They believe that providing help and make the kids believe in themselves is a winning concept.

There are always going to be people in our society who do not agree with this modern raising. Earlier in this text I wrote that ”freedom can lead to both success and misstakes”, and I actually have a good example on how it could be to have too much freedom on the internet. When I was 8 me and my mom traveled abroad to Spain where I got to know a guy that lived 30 miles from where I lived. To be able to keep in contact we added each other on a website called ”Lunarstorm”, which was a website where you could keep in contact with people, much similarities to Facebook. I was so happy that we could keep contact, but did not have a thought that other people also could add me on the site and try to reach out to me. This lead me to having contact with a pedophile without me knowing.

So, the positive thing with that freedom was that I could enjoy my new friend even though we lived far away, and the negative thing was that the freedom lead me to the pedophile since my mom did not know what I did out on the internet. My mom was so good about the situation and was very supportive about it. I sure would not have the same experience and be the person that I am today if my mom went mad about it and wanted to punish me by violence.

In summary, modern child-rearing has clearly many advantages, which makes the kids believe in themselves and have a safe supportive-system. But even if the modern raising have a lot of benefits, the unlimited freedom could also creative a distance between child and parent.

Child-rearing is about the process from raising a child from birth to adulthood as they can understand consequences of their own actions and take care of themselves. Raising a child requires a lot of nursing, caring and the most important, love and patient.

When he put a big plate on his head and dropped it, a family friend to the mother in the story told her that the only thing that would teach Dicky to behave is to let the father in the family whip him. I personally think that this made Dicky more distanced from his parents rather than understanding. This leads us to a big difference from that time versus now. Nowadays a lot of parents does not think that whipping or violence is solving any kind of problem, rather the opposite.
